Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi 2015

Ganesh Chaturthi, the great Ganesha festival, also called “Vinayaka Chavithi” or “Vinayak Chaturthi” is celebrated by Hindus around the worldwide as the birthday of their Lord Ganesha. It is celebrated during the Hindu month of Bhadra (almost mid-August to mid-September) and outstanding and most elegant of them, particularly in the western India state of Maharashtra, continues for 10 days, ending on the day of “Ananta Chaturdashi”.

It is not clear when Ganesh Chaturthi was first observed. According to some of the history records, the festival was celebrated in Pune as a public event during the sovereignty of Shivaji, which was the founder of the Maratha Empire in 1630-80. From 1749 to 1818, the Peshwas refreshed the celebrations in Pune. With the fall of the Peshwas, this festival lost its national support and became an isolated family celebration till its regeneration by the Lokmanya Tilak. In 1893, Lokmanya Tilak changed this family festival into a large public festival. He promoted Ganesh Chaturthi as a main festival in order to fill the gap between different classes and create patriotic enthusiasm among people against the British rule.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great religious zeal all over India. People take home Idols of Lord Ganesha and celebrate this carnival by worshiping the Lord in a distinctive way for a day and a half, 3, 5, 7 or may be 11 days depending upon the family convention and obligation of each respective individual. On the last day of event the idol is brought out in a colorful and musical procession to be submerged traditionally at a beach.

The entire public comes to worship Ganesha in charmingly done tents. These also serve as the spot for free medical checkups, donations for the poor, blood donation camps, melodramatic performances, devotional songs, films, etc. during the days of the festival.

This is one of the most common festivals in India. There are numerous reasons for this. Ganpati is all together a popular God. His sanctifications are raised at most religious observances as He is the one who can remove all hindrances to the success. He is the giver of luck and can help to evade natural disasters.
